Personal Development - Overview

Statement of Intent:

The Priory Ruskin Academy offers a vibrant and stimulating learning environment where every young person is challenged to reach their full potential.  Our students are proud of their Academy, where outstanding teachers and dedicated pastoral teams ensure high standards of academic success and a sense of personal responsibility.

The overarching intent of the curriculum at Ruskin (both in and out of the classroom) is to improve the life chances of our pupils so they become true citizens of the world.  As such, the curriculum provides intellectual challenge and rigour, broadens cultural and philosophical horizons and develops a keen sense of self-worth in our students’ ability to play a meaningful role in the local, national and international community.   Our broad and balanced curriculum holds at its heart fundamental British Values which promotes respect and tolerance of all faiths, democracy, respect of law and rules and the belief in liberty and freedom for all people.

We believe that the Academy should actively promote all students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development by providing positive experiences through planned and coherent opportunities in the curriculum and through interactions with teachers, other adults and the local community. The aim of the PSHE curriculum is to link and strengthen our whole Academy approach in order that the values inherent in our caring ethos becomes a reality for the students.

The Academy has a full and comprehensive Personal Development programme which includes RSE, Health, SMSC, British Values, Careers, Equality and Diversity and PSHE and together with a coherent assembly programme, focussed Tutor time, Ruskin Respects, strong House ethos, we endeavour to offer an inspiring and holistic experience to enable our young people to be Responsible, Reflective and Active Citizens with a strong awareness of British values.  Students' SMSC development is closely connected to the ethos and values of the school including Wisdom, Curiosity, Generosity, Courage and Passion.
