Each subject will set homework every three or four lessons. All homework will be logged by teachers via Show My Homework (Please see the link below), we would encourage parents to regularly check this platform in order for them to see the variety of homework being set.

The main purpose of the homework is to encourage self-disciplined students who have learned to consolidate their learning, but also had the opportunity to stretch themselves, ready for GCSE terminal exams, Further Education, University and/or the world of work.

Types of homework may include recall questions, application of current knowledge or shorter/longer written pieces of work. It could be set using a variety of online platforms or work may need to be handed in. 

KS4 subjects will vary in the frequency of how often the work will be set.  

Below is an explanation of how each subject will set work at KS3:

English

Homework will be set on a weekly basis. This may take the form of spellings, extended writing tasks, comprehension tasks, creative tasks, or quizzes. 

Maths

At least one piece of homework will be set on a weekly basis. This could include tasks such as a key skills booklet (either online using Microsoft Forms or printed), problem solving questions or specific tasks to follow up the learning done in lessons. Some of these follow up tasks could be set using such online resources such as Dr Frost Maths.  

Science

Each unit / half term homework will usually be set as follows:  1. An exam style question requiring at least one paragraph of writing.  2. An extended task in which pupils’ present key information in the style they feel most appropriate, with the support of a progress ladder.  3. Test revision supported through online platforms.  4. Additional shorter tasks such as learning key word spellings as identified by individual staff.

MFL

Students are set homework at least once every 2 weeks, this will be more frequent if they are dual linguists.  Types of tasks set are: Learning vocabulary for spelling / recognition tests; translation of texts both to and from the Target Language; listening exercises and also writing extended pieces of work.  Additionally, worksheets that support the taught course are also provided.  Research into Cultural aspects may also be requested. 

History

Each week students will be set a multiple-choice quiz through Show My Homework,  to help strengthen their knowledge of content covered in lessons. This quiz will be a combination of knowledge from that week and previous learning. 

Geography

Students will be set a homework every two weeks, this could be spellings, a task from the department booklet or a separate task set by their class teacher.  

RE

Students will be set a homework every three weeks, this could be spellings or a separate task set by their class teacher.  

Performing Arts

Subject specific vocabulary tests are set each term alongside practical homework tasks.  There is also an optional homework for those who wish to earn House Points and Ruskin Respects through attending a skills and techniques homework club to enable students to personalise their independent learning.

Design Technology

Students will be set a range of homework’s to develop their understanding of designing and making products in a range of material areas including food, wood, plastics, electronics and graphics. At least three homework’s will be set across the material areas each half term and could include learning key vocabulary for a spelling test, revising for an end of unit test, research projects or investigation tasks.

Art

Students will usually be set homework twice per topic, at the beginning, for a research task or at the end for an evaluation task. They will also be set a spelling test for each topic. Any further homework may be set at the teacher's discretion.

ICT

Students will usually be set a homework every third lesson, one will be a practical activity related to the unit being covered and the other will be a revision task in preparation for their end of unit test.  In addition, students will be given a spelling test per unit.
