Geography
A Geography student has an informed understanding of the World around us. They experience the study of contemporary geographical issues that helps them to gain an appreciation and understanding of world affairs, helping them to become global citizens. They understand the physical processes that shape the environments we live in as well as the human influences upon these areas. The subject encourages students to be investigative and question and research the theories they have studied, supported through the use of fieldwork. The intent of the Geography curriculum is to foster an enthusiasm for the world in which we live as well as developing decision making, analytical and investigative skills that students can apply to wider aspects of life.
Our geography curriculum fosters a curiosity in students to know and understand the world around us. Students will engage with substantive, disciplinary and procedural knowledge in geography and develop the ability to use all three types of powerful knowledge to investigate the world around them and communicate their thinking to others. Geographers seek to understand the causes, consequences and management of issues and risks at a local, national and global scale. In doing so, students are inspired to be curious, forward thinking yet compassionate about the world around them. Students will discover a sense of place, space and time through physical and human geography when gaining an understanding of the physical processes that shape environments, there is an opportunity to explore interdependence between the natural and human world. The geography curriculum offers opportunity for students to study geography through the lens of GIS to support their developing understanding of how complex the world is by adding a layer of information at a time and learning how to analyse this. Students can cultivate an understanding of sustainability and the impact that they can have on an ever-changing planet.
Our geography curriculum has been designed to inspire a sense of awe and wonder with our physical and human surrounding, empowering young people to take part in conversations as adults using their rich and varied knowledge of the world around them. Our curriculum is rooted in disciplinary knowledge that will build students ability to both think and write like a geographer, this will include building an understanding of where the discipline of geography came from and how it has developed and will continue to develop over time. Students will meet a wide range of Geographers through KS3-5 to further embed their understanding of geography in a real-world context. Students will complete fieldwork and work with geographical theory to build investigative skills. Fieldwork is vital for students to build an understanding of the scale and power of studying geography.
Students build an appreciation for the moral purpose and synoptic nature of our subject through the study of contemporary issues as well as engaging in social, economic, environmental and political debate. Through this study, students will consider their own choices, decisions and opinions about their local community up to a global scale. Geography can help their development as a well-informed, responsible whole student who will become members of society with a generosity of spirit towards all other inhabitants of the planet. Geography helps to build cultural literacy and encourage intellectual curiosity, foster empathy and respect for the complexity of the world we live in. Geography especially promotes the British Values of Democracy, Respect and Tolerance and Individual Liberty.
